Birdman
The film took home a total of four Oscars, including the awards for best director, cinematography and original screenplay. The best picture competition was seen as a two-film race between “Birdman” and “Boyhood.” But “The Grand Budapest Hotel” wound up winning four awards as well, in more technical categories.
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Eddie Redmayne
Mr. Redmayne, who portrayed Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” beat out Michael Keaton of “Birdman,” who was seen as the other favorite.
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Julianne Moore
Ms. Moore was seen as a lock for the best actress win in “Still Alice,” in which she portrayed a woman struggling with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
J.K. Simmons
Mr. Simmons was considered another Oscar lock for his performance as a sadistic music teacher in “Whiplash.”
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Patricia Arquette
Ms. Arquette netted the sole win for “Boyhood.” Her plea for equal rights for “women in the United States of America” in her speech got a big ovation.
BEST DIRECTOR
Alejandro G. Iñárritu
Mr. Iñárritu claimed his first best director Oscar, for “Birdman.”
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Citizenfour
“Citizenfour,” a documentary centered on Edward J. Snowden, was another Oscar favorite.
