May we have the attention of the class, please: “School of Rock” will indeed be in session on Broadway this fall. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical adaptation of the 2003 Jack Black comedy has now solidified its Broadway plans, and is to begin previews at the Winter Garden Theater on Nov. 9 with its opening night scheduled for Dec. 6, its press representatives said Tuesday.
The stage production, which is directed by Laurence Connor (“Les Misérables”), features new music by Mr. Lloyd Webber (“Cats,” “Evita,” “The Phantom of the Opera”) and lyrics by Glenn Slater (“Tangled”), and a book by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”). Alex Brightman will star as Dewey Finn, a slovenly rock-music fanatic who shapes a class of prep-school students into his dream band. Mr. Brightman, who has performed on Broadway in “Big Fish” and “Matilda the Musical,” has been playing the Dewey role in a current workshop production of “School of Rock” that has run intermittently at the Gramercy Theater in Manhattan.
